Essential Hair Care Tips
Let's be honest kings, queens and all royalties in-between...hair care can be very overwhelming! Each individual crown requires a customized hair regimen to keep it in regal condition. While no routine is a "one size fits all, there are tips that are universal to all hair types. Whether you are transitioning, have been natural for a while, or are relaxing your hair, here are some tips to help get you started or continue your healthy hair care journey.
1. Section your Hair
Natural hair can be thicker than a snicker! Because this is the case it's important to make sure your hair is parted into manageable sections. Doing this ensures you manage all of your hair and not just the outer layer. section it when
- Detangling
- Washing
- Applying product
- And trimming your hair
while it can be time-consuming I promise your hair(and totally toned arms) will thank us later!
2. Shampoo Your Roots Only.
Unless your hair has a lot of build-up on the shaft, it's a general rule to only shampoo your roots and allow the water to carry the shampoo down the strands of your hair. This is because the ends of our hair are the oldest and most fragile. Treat them with love and tenderness (like you would with your Great Old GrandMama Esther...at least we hope you're treating her right). There's no need to vigorously scrub your ends or dehydrate them when all the gunk and oil build-up is on the scalp!
3. Clarify Your Hair
We are creatives, for centuries we have loved expressing ourselves through our hair by turning it into walking art. We use a toothbrush and edge control to stroke our baby hairs perfectly into place like waves in the oceans, we use gel to sculpt and carve each individual parting for box braids and we use oil to seal in our moisture and hard work, so that it can last longer. At the end of the day however all of these things, over time clog our hair follicles. This results in weighed-down hair, less defined curls, and your products being less effective since they can not penetrate your hair. At least once a month you should be clarifying your hair. We recommend our Tingling Clarifying Shampoo Bar which gently clarifies your hair while stimulating hair growth and leaving it squeaky clean!
4. Deep Condition Your Hair
We get it, wash day is a hassle and time-consuming. Conditioning your hair is already a lot of work so we (understandably) roll our eyes at the thought of DEEP conditioning it. The truth is however, it's a necessary and very worthwhile hassle! Deep conditioning your hair not only helps you maintain moisture-rich nourished curls but also helps makes detangling a breeze! Deep condition your hair at least twice a month (preferably with heat, especially if you have low porosity hair, to help your conditioner deeply penetrate your hair) and your hair will thank you!
5. Change Up Your Style For Healthier Hair
Change up the parting of your hair! repeated parting in the same spot and constant updos lead to hair breakage (I'm talking to you cutie with the pineapple fro!) In short, wearing your hair in the same part for too long weighs down one side of your hair more than the other which weakens the roots and leads to breakage.
In addition to that constantly doing updos cause tension which can pull out your hair and lead to breakage. While it is important to keep your hair off your shoulder and prevent it from rubbing against you ( which can lead to lost moisture and...yep you guessed it more breakage), it's important to let your hair down to breathe occasionally. We recommend changing your parting and hair style about every three days.
6. Know Your Porosity
knowing your hair porosity can drastically change how you manage and handle your hair. Hair porosity is essentially how your hair absorbs water, oil, product, and moisture, as well as how well it retains them. The three types of hair porosities include high porosity, medium porosity, and low porosity. To learn more about hair porosity and how to care for your hair based on it, check out our hair porosity blog. We said porosity a lot didn't we? Hopefully, that makes you subliminally want to find yours out ;). (That's right we're using psychology on ya!)
7. Seal In Moisture
There are two main types of oils commonly used in the natural hair care community. There are moisturizing oils that penetrate the hair shaft in order to moisturize and revitalize it, such as coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil (Get the image of avocado toast out of your head!). Then there's sealing oils. sealing oils do not penetrate your hair shaft, they sit on top of it. Sealing oils act as a barrier to keep moisture locked in your hair for longer. This is a crucial step in your hair care regimen especially if you have low porosity hair. Just keep in mind that sealing in moisture will keep other moisture out. This is why it's very important to make sure your hair is fully moisturized prior to sealing any moisture. Once you've finished that crucial step lock it all in with our Simple sealant!
8. Regular Trims
We know you've been betrayed before. You've gone to the salon asking for a trim and walked out looking like André 3000. But hey, ya know why that's necessary ( haha see what we did there! )? It's necessary because it encourages hair growth. Our older hair is more fragile and prone to becoming split at the ends. These split ends continue to split up to the root of your hair which leads to frizz, breakage, and overall thinner, damaged hair that will not grow! Do not hold on to dead length, a general rule of thumb is that if you can see your shirt through the hair, cut that part off.
9. Silk/Satin Is Your Best Friend
Your hair is constantly rubbing against your shoulders, clothes, pillowcases, and more. all of this friction dries out your hair and over time will cause split ends and breakage. This is why it is extremely important to protect your hair with either satin or silk. There's no extreme difference when it comes to the two other than price. Both work well to protect your crown, so whether it's a bonnet or pillow case make sure your sleeping on luxury and retaining moisture!
10. Stay Unstressed And Blessed!
Your mental health can seriously take a toll on your physical health. Extreme stress makes hair follicle's go into a resting phase and leads to hair loss/balding. It's important to make sure you're taking care of your body, soul, and mind. Take time to practice self-care, alone time, as well as self-love. Always remember that you are worth more than your hair and that you are worthy of a happy stress-free living experience!
